What can an AI agent do with
Charge and refund?
It can create and capture charges, and it can create and cancel refunds. Refunds go back to the card that was charged.
How to spot it
On a Stripe connection or settings screen, this is Charges and Refunds: Write.
With it, an agent can
- Refund all or part of a payment
- Cancel a refund that is still waiting on customer action
- Create, update, and capture charges
- Read your charges and refunds
It cannot, on its own
- It cannot refund more than what is left on a charge
- It cannot send a refund to a different card than the one charged
What a bad day looks like
It could refund a stack of real orders after a fake customer complaint, and that money leaves your balance.
Set it up safer
- Use an agent-tagged restricted key; Stripe's default approval rule then holds new refunds for review
- Add an amount condition so refunds over your limit need approval
- Use Charges and Refunds: Read if it only needs to look
Narrower permissions on Stripe:
- Read payments and refunds
Charges and Refunds: Read
Ask the company selling the agent
- When does it refund without asking me?
- Does it work with Stripe approval rules for refunds?
- Is there a cap on how much it can refund in a day?

Thinking about a specific agent?
Tell us what it connects to, what it is allowed to do and who approves its work. You get a plain-language label of what it can touch and what to ask the seller. It takes a couple of minutes, and your answers stay in your browser unless you choose to post a test job.
Or have a person go through the AI apps on up to 3 of your business services with you and get a written report, for $249.
This page explains what a permission allows. It does not describe, test or rate any product. Permission details are summarized in our own words from the provider's documentation, linked on the page; providers change their documentation, so check the source before you rely on a detail.
