Shopify permissions,
in plain English.
When you install an app, Shopify shows the permissions it wants and you approve them. An app can also ask for more permissions later, after install. Any permission that lets an app change something also lets it read that thing. Some permissions need Shopify's own approval before an app can ask for them at all.
- Read recent orders
It can see your store's orders from the last 60 days. That includes who bought, what they bought, payments, and shipping. - Read your full order history
This removes the 60 day limit. With it, the agent can see every order your store has, not just recent ones. - Change, cancel, and refund orders
It can change your orders, cancel them, and refund them. A cancel can refund the customer, put items back in stock, and notify the customer. It can also read your orders. - Edit existing orders
It can edit orders that were already placed, such as the items, quantities, discounts, and shipping lines, and save those edits. Only items that have not been fulfilled yet can be edited. If the total changes, the customer may owe more or be due a refund. - Create draft orders and turn them into real orders
It can create draft orders and turn them into real orders. When it completes a draft, it can mark the order as paid, and the customer can be notified. - Read your customer list
It can see your customers and their contact details, purchase history, and marketing preferences. - Add, change, and delete customers
It can add, change, and delete customers in your store. It can also read them. - Create, change, and delete products
It can create, change, and delete your products and collections. A delete is permanent and removes the product's variants, media, and stock records too. - Change stock levels
It can change how many units of each item you have in stock. It can also read your stock levels. - Create and change discounts
It can create, change, and delete discount codes and automatic discounts, such as a percentage off, a fixed amount off, or free shipping. - Create gift cards
It can create gift cards with a starting value and give them to customers. Customers can spend gift cards in your store like money. - Process returns and refunds
It can create and process returns and exchanges, decide what happens to returned items, and refund the customer as part of a return. - Mark orders as shipped
It can mark order items as fulfilled, add tracking details, and choose whether the customer is notified. - Change your store's theme
It can change the files of your online store theme, which controls how your store looks. An app offered to many stores also needs a special exemption from Shopify to do this. - Add scripts to your storefront
It can add JavaScript from another website to your storefront pages. Adding scripts to the order status page is an older option that Shopify has deprecated. This only works with older vintage themes. - Read your Shopify Payments account
It can see your Shopify Payments account, including balances in each currency and your payout schedule.
Thinking about a specific agent?
Tell us what it connects to, what it is allowed to do and who approves its work. You get a plain-language label of what it can touch and what to ask the seller. It takes a couple of minutes, and your answers stay in your browser unless you choose to post a test job.
Or have a person go through the AI apps on up to 3 of your business services with you and get a written report, for $249.
This page explains what a permission allows. It does not describe, test or rate any product. Permission details are summarized in our own words from the provider's documentation, linked on the page; providers change their documentation, so check the source before you rely on a detail.
